John Oliver and his wife Lucretia were the first white settlers to arrive in Cades Cove. Their first winter was spent using an abandoned Cherokee hut as their only means to escape the elements. They built their first home in 1822. The home site can be visited by using Cades Cove Loop road in Blount County, Tennessee.
